History[]

Gwen Reilly is an average musically talented girl, with confidence and self-esteem issues. She lives with her parents, younger brother Trevor and her Grandmother Willy. She and her parents love each other dearly. But she often feels outdone and upstaged by her brilliant younger brother. Due to his amazing academic achievements, he often intends to get more of their parents attention.

What she never knew, was that the women in one side of her family came from a bloodline of benevolent witches known as the Setterwind. Also that her Grandmother Willy was the current keeper of the power.

During the events of the story, it was her 16th birthday. Therefore, her Grandmother passed down her magic to her. Her Grandmother gave her a Jasper's Light amulet. She explained to her that it was a long time family tradition. Her grandma had given her a Jasper's Light amulet on her 16th birthday. Also that her grandmother got one from her grandmother on her 16th birthday from hers as well. Before her Grandma could explain their families history in details with a book, her mother revealed that she had quit the school band that day. Her grandmother was very upset and disappointed to her this. Her Grandmother encouraged her not to give up on music. Since she believed that it was her gift. Later that evening, her parents went to a parent-teacher conference at her school. So she was asked to babysit her brother. She objected, because she was invited to a party. So she begged her Grandma to babysit, but her Grandma was going to a ladies club meeting. However on her parents way out, she found her Grandma would be back home at 8:00 pm. Therefore she could attend the party. This greatly cheered her up.

Earlier in the evening, her brother had observed their Grandma opening a small wooden chest. It had the word BADGE carved onto it. Then after their parents and Grandma left, her brother snooped through their Grandma's bedroom. He soon found the chest and unlocked it. Oddly it only contained a small crystal and a flute. It was unbeknownst to to either of them that this was the magical Setterwind Flute, and the crystal was a containment unit for Badge. Badge was the corporeal manifestation from the evil part of the Setterwind family magic. So it was safely contained within the crystal.

Then her brother's curiosity got the best of him, so he blew the flute. It made a loud and brief magical sound. Then her house was instantly surrounded in fog. Then all of the power and the lights went out. Then she heard a man knocking at the door asking for help, because he had a car accident. She was too afraid to let a stranger into the house, so she refused. Then she thought that their Grandma was home, but forgot her keys. So she opened the door. Then suddenly a horrifying evil badger like goblin entered the house. It was Badge! Her brother had just mistakenly freed, Badge from containment. Then Badge came inside demanding the Setterwind. However, she didn't know what it was at first.

Although horrified, her brother demanded he leave her alone. Then Badge kidnapped her brother, and sent him to his lair, he would be returned in exchange for the Setterwind.

Soon after reviewing the family history book, she learned what the Setterwind was, and that she was the new Setterwind witch. So her birthright named was: Gwendolyn Setterwind. Then she memorized a containment spell, that their ancestor Celina Setterwind made six centuries ago. When she put on her amulet, she could see it glowing brightly red with power. Then she approached Badge and tried the containment spell. But it didn't work. Since her magic was not yet strong enough.

Then just as her Grandma was dropped off back home, she could tell that something was wrong. So she used her amulet and entered Badge's lair. Then her Grandma bravely decided to confront Badge herself. So she sent her back home. As she was sent home, her Grandmother reminded her that music was her "gift" and to now play the song.

Back at home she panicked at first. Then while reviewing the chest, she finally figured out what her Grandmother meant by playing the song. The word BADGE on the chest stood for musical notes: B-A-D-G-E. So she used the Setterwind Magic Flute and played the notes one by one. This successfully sent Badge back into containment, and rescued her brother and Grandmother.

When her brother and Grandmother safely got home, she as so happy and relieved to see them back safe and sound. She told her Granddaughter that didn't really understand it. Then her Grandmother said that she would eventually understand her powers. She told her that the Setterwind magic had been passed down from Grandmother to Granddaughter for the past six centuries. But along with their magic, comes the corporeal manifestation, from the evil side of it. Which they must keep contained and guarded at all times.

Then her brother complained. Not because he was jealous. But because all she got to do was look after the containment chest. Then he went into details about all the neat and wonderful things that she could do with her magic. Then suddenly her Grandmother used the residual she had magic left, and casted a spell on him. This made him forget all about the evenings events, including what was in the chest. She was amazed that she made him forget all about it. Then her Grandmother proudly passed the chest down to her.
