Shandu is a character created by Gary. He appeared in the episode "The Tale of the Magician's Assistant".

Shandu was a wise and powerful old magician who had been entrusted with an ancient magic wand that possessed potent powers. Many years ago, for a long time, he was the top hit on Broadway - he performed for the best shows in Europe, and even had his own film series.

However, in his old age, his days of glory were past and gone, and his films were not even on VHS video. All he had were his old reviews, some faded movie posters, and his old rundown vehicle.

In the 1990s, Shandu tried to make a comeback, and hired Todd Maker as his assistant. Though he was initially unimpressed with Todd (who was completely inexperienced in magic) and had a tendency to be hard on him, Shandu was still a patient teacher who constantly reminded him about the three cardinal rules of magic:

  1. Never touch another magician's wand unless he hands it to you.
  2. Only let the audience see what you want them to see.
  3. Never get caught in your own reflection.

Despite their rocky starting and subsequent disagreements, Shandu and Todd eventually settled their differences, and performed a successful magic show at a children's birthday party.

Soon afterwards, however, Todd stole Shandu's magic wand (despite knowing the rules by heart), and started using it for mundane tasks, such as cleaning up messy rooms and instantly conjuring a four-piece storyboard for his mother's job. Due to Todd's breaking the first cardinal rule and usage of the wand without proper training, an ancient curse on the wand was triggered: Nazrak, a powerful demon magician who had been imprisoned for centuries in a vortex, was able to break the gradually weakening seal of his prison, and manifest in corporeal form.

Nazrak forcefully compelled Shandu to take his place in the vortex, and later tried to imprison Todd as well. Fortunately, due to a magical reminder from Shandu regarding the rules, Todd managed to trick Nazrak into getting caught in his own reflection, which reversed the switch: Nazrak was forced to return to his prison, and Shandu returned.

Shandu congratulated Todd for his success, and apologized for not believing in him enough earlier. Having realized now that his assistant did indeed have good potential in magic, he officially passed the magic wand to Todd, with an assurance that he will not be far.

However, he left Todd with one more rule:

4. Always leave them wanting more.

With a graceful bow, Shandu disappeared in a ball of blue light, and it was revealed that he was never seen or heard from again.
